The recently renovated Rossi Pool in Inner Richmond in San Francisco is clean, bright, and quiet. The facility opened in February 2022 following a $15M renovation, and, post-makeover, should be a first-pick for anyone in the surrounding community looking to get some laps in.
San Francisco city pools are closed on Sundays and Mondays, and lap swim hours during the rest of the week are inconsistent; visitors will definitely need to check available hours online carefully before heading to the pool. The website also shows availability for senior swim hours, and swim lessons/ family swim hours on Saturdays. Parking upon arriving was easy for me- there is plenty of free 2 hour street parking on Arguello between Anza & Turk (signs posted show street cleaning from 8-10a on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month).
Admission to the pool is standard across SF city pools- $7 for adults, $1 for children. The locker rooms have all the minimum basics, elevated by the fact that everything is brand new. There are more than enough large lockers for day use, a communal shower space with one private wheelchair accessible shower, body wash, hand dryers, a swim suit dryer, 4 restroom stalls. The space is more than sufficient for the pool traffic, and everything feels clean. There is a filtered water bottle fill station in the lobby. BYO towel.
The pool area is spacious and bright. There’s a mural that brings some life to the space, and big windows that bring plenty of natural light inside. The facility is well ventilated- its a comfortable warm temperature on deck, but the air felt clean so that the chlorine smell wasn’t stifling. I even asked if it was a salt water pool- the chlorine in the pool was barely noticeable and did not leave me with a smell or overly dry skin/hair.
There’s something about swimming in a new pool that’s a total luxury- new flags, new lanelines & pace clocks (digital & analog), even the infrastructure- new gutters, new tiling- it’s hard to come by and somehow just makes me want to stay a little bit longer, you know?! For anyone coming to train seeking measurable results, the 33.3 yard (100 ft) course is less than ideal. I find it really nice for an easy “stretch out” or “brain off” swim, or if you are looking to simply swim laps. And 33.3 is great for improving general fitness- “breaks” on the wall come less often!
There were slow, medium, fast dedicated lanes & a small selection of kickboards and buoys to borrow. There were basic starting blocks, but they were off limits during lap swim hours when I visited. I didn’t have to wait to get in- there were roughly 2 people per lane, which did not feel crowded in the longer pool. We split the lane, which was totally comfortable with the width of the lane space.
Overall, I was wowed by my experience at the Rossi Pool. I had not visited before the renovation, and was underwhelmed at the photos showing the facility pre-2022, but now urge any swimmer in the surrounding community to check it out.
